Lost Family and Inca Treasure
Finding
your long-lost family members and the Inca Treasure are 2 of the primary side
quests of Pirates!, and I believe, the only side quests on any NES
game to date.

Governors issue information on the whereabouts of an Evil Spaniard, whom in turn, knows the plantations where your family members are being held.

The conversation about family comes up almost randomly and after you have completed a mission or two for the Governor.

He'll tell you straight out where the Evil Spaniard was last seen, so you can quickly hop aboard your ship and make way to that town.

If you dilly-dally and take your sweet time to sail over to town, the Evil Spaniard may just have left.
You'll have to start at the beginning again if this happens.

When inside of the town, a window should pop-up telling you of the Evil Spaniard's "sneaky ways of escape". Fortunately you catch up to him for a fencing match, his last.

The Spaniard isn't any different or more powerful than other normal fencers in the game. Most times his morale will begin at angry. In short, he's a pushover.

After defeating the Evil Spaniard, he'll present to you a quarter of a map to your first lost family member. Whip out the map and try to compare and contrast the landscaping to find the exact location.
Most times than not you won't have a clue as to where this area could be.
Travel back to a Governor to continue the mission of finding more pieces of the map.

As you can see from the two maps, a 1/4 portion can certainly clear up a whole lot.

Thankfully I noticed the strange island patterns along in my travels, so I sailed right to it.
However, if you still can't make headway as to where your family is at, continue the process again for the remaining piece or two.

Disembark onto dry land and travel to the area nearby the plantation icon shown on the map.
From the Information window, choose 'Search' to search in the general vicinity.

True pirates have a code of honor and love for their family!
Your sister/mother/father/brother will show affection and talk about an exciting tale that lives in the family's history.

And as a reward of thanks, you'll receive a fourth of the map to the lost Inca treasure.
This treasure is the biggest, most expensive booty in the entire game! Make sure you don't miss out on this loot!

Continue the mission to find the other remaining family members and maps.

Avast! Another piece of the map to the lost Inca treasure!

I suggest rescuing all family members before hunting for the Inca jewels. Gaining all family really boosts your score and happiness at the end of the game.
