All maidens in Pirates! are nothing but gold diggers. Period. If you try to make pleasant conversation and aren't important enough for them, they'll simply give you the third degree.

Proposing when "unworthy" for the lady will lead to an array of insults.

The title rank given to you by the Governor determines what kind of girl you can expect to be introduced to.

When enough power and prestige is amounted, a new and prettier daughter of the Governor becomes available to you!

Also take note that all of the Governor's daughters have suitors. Pay attention to the suitor's title rank. When/if you meet or outrank them, you'll have the solid chance of a proposal or friendship.

Proposing is only a matter of choosing the 'Propose marriage' option.

Friendships occur when you outrank the girl's suitor but choose to only make conversation, not wed.

She'll offer exclusive information about such things as where the Treasure Fleets and Silver Trains are currently docked at.
