Uninvited

I know I'm going to ruffle a few gamer's feathers for not making Castlevania number one. Sue me, I guess I like giving underdogs top spot. In all seriousness, beneath all the hype and word of mouth, I believe the scrariest and most innovative horror NES video game ever should go to the king of the "cemetery crop": Uninvited.

Uninvited begins inside of a broken down car. As soon as you exit it, BOOM, the automobile explodes into a firey blaze. The only thing around is a lone mansion. You begin to wonder if your sister, that was traveling with you, went inside for help. You decide to find out...

Uninvited is a point-and-click adventure game similar to Shadowgate (NOT Maniac Mansion) that invokes spooky atmosphere and an awesome written script consisting of diaries, personal warnings, or speech from other characters you meet.

The feeling of aloneness in first person perspective serves many of the game's chills while you explore and encounter ghost ladies, demons, and warnings throughout your visit to the damned house.

For best results you should turn out the lights, get into the Halloween spirit, and push the power button. It'll provide at least a few hours of screaming delight.
