Gargoyle's Quest II

One of Capcom's hidden masterpieces, Gargoyle's Quest II, puts you in a role that game companies never dared to try before... you become the antagonist.

The player controls Firebrand, a red devil that looks awfully familiar to certain creature from a certain Ghosts 'n Goblins game. Certainly! Almost everything in GQII is a welcomed change to the otherwise thoroughly used-out side-scrolling genre. The game has towns, Final Fantasy overhead style, but the inhabitants aren't the normal townsfolk you come to expect. Nope, rather herds of zombies, mummies, and monsters of such kind for Firebrand to mingle with.

The actual playing levels are very elaborate, containing many hellish obstacles and enemies that you journey into throughout the devil realm. Your control abilities are fresh, too, as now you can flap your wings to fly for a few seconds lapse of time and breathe fire from a stern gargoyle mouth. GQII definitely deserves fourth spot, if not higher, proving that it's okay to be the bad guy...sometimes.
