  Welcome
ghouls and goblins to a special feature of NES
Player. Well, it is that time again. A
short-lived period of realization that summer has
long died and we are forcibly accepting the
changes that follow. Fall has made itself feel
comfortable in our lives until the coldness of
late November sneaks up close behind on us. This
is the time of year when we celebrate autumn by
placing seasonal corn stalks, haystacks, and
pumpkins in and outside of our homes in the
season's tradition. Let's not dance around the
subject, though. We all know that October is best
known for one day and one day alone. A certain
holiday that has evolved through the generations
-- the event we refer to as all hollow's eve.
Today's Halloween
is treated as a Hallmark sort-of holiday. Kids
change identity for a single night and go house
to house in hope of candy treats. Everything is
fit into an organized procedure, even down to
what you say (the formal "Trick or
Treat" slogan). According to the holiday's
much deeper history, the night of the 31st has a
much more powerful and even cynical meaning that
can be found in the passes of its long history
consisting of witchcraft, hangings, satanists,
and possessions. It is the one time of the year
that we prepare for our own inevitable death by
sometimes dressing as someone who has already bit
the dust. Scared stupid? You should be..
Putting aside the
past traditions for now, though, current
preparation is a thing of necessity and is more
so important during the remaining months of the
year. We prepare as we carve a jack o' lantern,
as we go shopping for a mask or costume, and even
when we buy bags of candy. The greatest tool of
prepartion, however, is to become in a fashioned
state of mind. Whether it's trading invented
ghost stories with a close one or involving
yourself in an already drawn-out story of events
in a video game, the days that follow up to the
actual date of haunting can prove to be just as
exciting and scary.
In this top ten
list I have chosen the best NES games that I feel
successfully portray "Halloween-ish
themes" and include some of the seasonal
feelings of this October month. So proceed to
number ten by clicking on the link below...that
is, if you're not afraid.
