| Ah, the good times of the NES. New teen images
had arrived in shape of hit television shows
such as "Saved By the Bell" that definined
the culture. Uses of slang derivatives within
an episode seemed to multiply weekly. (Geek,
preppie, freak, etc.) Certainly more expressions
were later introduced, and I have taken the
initiative to present some of the more popular
culutral, street words in this little overlook
of the 80's lingo.
Around this time there was another big impact on the nation,
a little thing that delevoped into the mindless,
but musically beat-appealing, form of music
we call "rap". Hip-hop had become
more of an everyday listening than ever, presenting
many of the slang terms right into the homes
of America nationwide. Such words like: homeboy,
homie, chill, def, bad (when bad meant
good).
I
chose a few of my favorite catch phrases and,
beside each, a small definition with proper
usage.

K-Rad
= Another word to describe something "good" or "cool".
It feels silly saying it today, and that's
why it is no longer included in slang vocabulary
of present day. Don't let society hold your
imaginative tongue, though. example:
Those chicks can come over anytime. They certainly
were K-rad material!
Suck
an egg = A clever way to say shut your mouth. I would almost always
prefer this over the casual "f** you"
of today's standard. example:
Oh, why don't you go suck an egg!
Poser
= (synonym: biter) Acting in a way that isn't your normal self.
Trying to impress others by impersonating
who they think is cool. example:
Stop trying to imitate my coolness, you poser.
Boss
= Means ruling over others. Term for greatness. example:
Those new Guess jeans are way boss, Mr. G!
Killer
= A surfer term describing something gigantic, or "insanely"
fun. example: Those waves
were totally killer, dude!
Don't
Have a Cow =
Came to be known as Bart Simpson's (of
The Simpsons fame) catchline. Meaning to relax,
not to worry. example: Don't
have a cow, man!
Some of these words may seem
funny to us now, but how do you think people
in the future will react to our own pop words.
Budweiser's "wazzzza" or the now
well-known word for cool -- phat, come to
my mind. Pretty high and tempting if you ask
me. Hah!
