MEGA JOY II

Origin: China
# of Games: 70
Type: Console/Multi-Game Device

Looks & Diagram

Mega Joy is a name product that proves NES pirates still are being made. This 'newer' pirated game is a controller/ console/ and 70 games all together inside of the Nintendo 64's controller design.

As you can see in my diagram, the buttons are featured in quite awkward places such as having the A and B buttons on the total opposite side of the D-pad making it hard to use and force you to swift the controller around. The button areas that would have featured the regular B and A (for the N64) are now replaced with the start and select buttons, which are also misplaced. But despite these qualms, the feel of it greatly oversoars its negatives and is a nice change of the regular, cramped NES control. Also the reset button (which OTHER pirate games should feature) is nice to quickly go back to the index of its 70 programmed games.

On its side you can see (starting from far left to right) the OFF/ON button, a slot to plug in a 6 volt DC adaptor, in the middle is where you place 6 double AA batteries into where the N64 rumble pack would be, and on the left is the only possible way to hook up the Mega Joy into a TV: RCA video and audio jacks.

General Info

(Main Index of Games)

Above is a picture of one of 4 screens that feature 20 games each, except for the last which only holds 10. To quickly flip through the lists, just press 'Select' to scroll in order of all 4.

Being the small minded, NES pirate newbie, I saw the advertised 70 games and was quite amazed. Well, the only thing that is amazing is how the makers managed to falsely publish such claims. Basically there's about 10 or so GOOD games, games that you would like to come back for more play later, but many of the games featured are actually DUPLICATED (many other pirated software like the 1000-in-One carts are known for this) and only are given a new name but the same game. And then there's some like the Track & Field events that are displayed as separate games, example: archery, running; when they really just target to the same game's title screen.

Getting to the changed names talk, many of the games' names are incorrectly displayed on the indexes. Either by spelling errors, missing letters, or invented titles.

Note-Worthy Games

As the famous saying goes: it's the quality that matters not quantity, and this is the best remark to call the Mega Joy II. There's only a handful of really good games and here's a list with a small outline of the more unique games:

Yie ar Kung~FU- The reason why I fine this one game so appealing is obviously due to its many quirky elements. Cheesy sound effects, really bad, laughable movement, and the pain you can see on the guy's face when he's kicked in the shins is classic. Though these little things grow old fast, it's a nice refreshment from the usual shooting/half-assed arcade games that plague the Mega Joy.

Sky Destroyer- This game has 99.9% of the feel from SEGA's After Burner plane shooter. It's fun to navigate (up-down-left-right) in the semi-3D screens while hoards of enemy planes are on a kamikaze mission to destroy you. FUN!

Lunar Ball- One of the few games that were released to the US ala the NES, it's also one of the most fun on this pirate. If you've ever played any computer based pool table game you've played Lunar Ball. It's just the simple point and shoot (while looking at your power meter) and ricochet pool balls to advance to further levels.

Dig Dug- Well this game defines the word classic. If you're one of the few gamers out there that haven't played it, you go around making tracks through the dirt while blowing up baddies and making them pop or trap guys underneath rocks on to smash them. When all the enemies are gone, you move on in the game. Simple-minded entertainment.

Taito Chase H.Q.- When I first selected the game I was, to say the least, shook up when I heard a booming voice in 8-bit audio graininess. I knew than that this was going to be a good game, and I was right! When you first start out it looks like the usual front perspective fake 3-D racer (*cough* Rad Racer) but then you travel through tunnels at "fast" speeds while trying to dodge bypassing cars. When you catch up to your target, apparently you play some kind of law enforcer, is the best part of the game. The objective is to just bang the hell out of the other car until it stops in flames. Take it from me, it's a blast to play!
