Arcade ClassicHey everybody! GTB here to give the third installment in the classic Donkey Kong Series, Donkey Kong 3. As a child, I played DK in the arcades and I always loved it. Then one day, I had heard of a sequel coming out called Donkey Kong 3. I had wanted to play the game as soon as I heard about it, but I had been hearing things... Things like Mario wasn't in it, and you spray bugs. Well, long story short, I never got around to playing it. So, for years, Donkey Kong 3 lay shrouded in mystery. That is... until I bought it for the NES.
Apparently you are Stanley the Bugman. You are protecting your greenhouses form Donkey Kong and his evil, fiendish ass. But to complicate things, DK starts banging on bees' nests, and sends bees flying everywhere. These bees are bent on stealing your flowers, so you have to spray them with bug spray. Also, worms will come crawling out of the bushes to come and kill you, so you better watch out.
Graphics: For being an arcade port and an early NES game, the graphics are pretty good. DK looks just a little more crisp than he did in Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. The levels are colorful and they aren;t boring, so you wont want to gouge out your eyes after playing this game. But the graphics do have their shortcomings. After all it is an early NES game. SO you have the usual blockiness and small characters without a whole lot of detail.
Sound: The sound isn't that horrible on this game except they play the same song over and over again. The song they do play is pretty fitting to the whole idea of bees coming after you. And when Donkey Kong falls on you, they pay a very maniacal sounding tune that is very appropriate. However because they play the same song through the whole game, I can't give this a high rating. The music just gets boring after a while.
Control: The controls in this game a very simple. You have to jump up and down on little platforms in each level, so you can get higher to spray DK in the ass with pesticides. The only problem is that this is the same for every level. It gets boring pretty quick. A little variety in the levels and controls would have helped this game out a lot.
Frustration: This game is pretty frustrating. You have to worry about 3 things at once, like the bees, DK, and the worms. There are a lot of bees flying around, and they want to steal your flowers, so it is a good idea to take care of them first, but then you have to worry about DK coming down and squashing you. All this and the fact that you can only shoot the pesticides upward makes this a pretty frustrating game. You will break a controller over this one.
......BOTTOM LINE: I have mixed feelings about this game. I can't seem to get very far in it because my head explodes too quickly. I don't like frustrating games, unless they are a lot fun. This game is sort of fun but not enough to make it a true classic.
