If I had ever heard of an NES Transformer game back in the day, I think complete wanting for a release is an understatement. Maybe, obsessive pleads to Nintendo Power is a better phrase. Anyways, a few weeks ago I had the chance of importing the Famicom game and my crazy predications came true; although crazily horrified is the type of definition to use with this weak, in all respects, game.

You play as Ultra Magnus, a fire truck robot, on his journey fighting Decepticons (the bad guys) to meet up with Megatron (leader of bad guys). Along the way you come across poorly drawn enemies of planes, controlled by robot men inside, that come at you and when destroyed, these bad guys occasionally drop items to double your fire power.

The coolest thing of the game is obviously the ability to transform from robot to truck and back that is triggered by holding down and B. In the weaponry department, the robot form sports a cliched gun (shoot-shoot-shoot) while the vehicle mode has a supply of bombs that can fire upwards and forward, when positioned in the right distance from an enemy.

......No game, however, can hide behind one unique feature. Graphics, sound, and control is barely poor (borderline awful). Visuals are very few and repetitive, both scenery and characters, and it makes things look like the cart was released during first batch of Famicom games ever created. The sound is equally bad as the same exact bg music is played throughout every single stage. Quality of the audio is bad, too, even the little jingle from the television show sounds more screechy than necessary. Lastly, control is only okay (compared to the other fields) with jumping as a robot seems awfully clumsy.

......Still I have been cleverly surprised by the fun factor of simple games, Ice Hockey comes to mind, and I rate fun as the top decision of my final grade. As you can see with my final grade, Master of Convoy is as much fun as being constantly punched in the arm: repetitive and painful. The leading factor of the game's un-fun manner is its extreme difficulty set. I do not pose to be some wizard of video games, but I barely made it a little farther than level 2 without seeing the game over screen enough times than I would like to admit. One hit you're dead and cheaply onslaught of baddies plague this game with this incurable disease of frustration. The only antidote is pushing the power button off.

......BOTTOM LINE: I really can't say much about this game that have you believe I favor it. I guess if you are a Transformer nut then go ahead and hunt down a copy. But even if you are someone in this category, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into, and how shelling out too much will disappoint you when you actually sit down and play. I could actually make a list of things that would have been changed without giving it as much as a second of thought. More Autobots (good guys) with their transforming abilities available, a much needed face lift of sharper more detailed graphics, more than one song, and an included difficulty level which correspond to their appropriate levels of easiness (Easy is easy, Medium is medium, Hard is hard, and Master is the same difficulty as featured in this game). TRANSFORMERS- CRAP IN DISGUISE!
