The scene was in its height from 1997-98 when the oldest sceners had #nes98 and NES Nation
When Tom was 14 or so, he started Brinstar which was probably the height of the scene
while I argue most of the scene sites are all based on humor, it was the community that was more entertaining than the factual NES aspect (a.k.a. NES World)

Each time there were "scene wars", people would break away into little groups. #nes98 #drk_warrior (or whatever) #nes_chat #nes/#zebes/##junkyard
Sappy has done a good job. I consider him the leader of the scene from 1998-2000
