 2 to 1 Controller
Modification
Originally intended to be a mod
that let two zappers connect to one controller port,
(2-player Duck Hunt!) it failed and became something
different. If you ever wanted to make Super Mario
Bros. tougher, I suggest looking into this mod! Two
players will both have to push the "A"
button on different controllers to make Mario jump.
Essentially I put the two controller ports into one.
Basic, basic, basic soldering knowledge is needed. I
didn't have any knowledge when I started this DIY,
but I got the mod working first try.

 |
First, strip your NES down to
the mother board. To get the metal covering off,
un-attach the power and port 1 and 2 by jiggling
them back and forth. Please note that on the
above pic a few things are missing that I had to
edit in paint. (i.e. The RF switch) Now remove
both controller ports and set the mother board
off to the side. |
 |
Next cut both of the
controller ports in half with a pair of scissors
and throw one of the "green parts" out. |
 |
Now strip all three sets of 7
coloured wires about 1 centimeter (I don't know
how many inches that is) down from the scissors
cut. I used an exacto blade on a popsicle stick
that I got from my multimedia class :P to do the
stripping. |
 |
Take all three purple wires
and "twist" them together. Heat up the
soldering iron and touch it to the stripped,
twisted metal. Uncoil some tv/audio solder and
touch it to the wire that's heating up. When the
solder suddenly melts pull the iron away. The
solder will cool almost instantly and form a bond
between the three. |
 |
Do the rest of the colour
combinations by matching them up and soldering
again. There is one more step... |
Now you must use some sort of
"anti shocking device" (real technical eh?)
to stop the soldering blobs from touching each other
and shorting out when being used. I used "Star
Brite Liquid Electrical Tape". Just paint it on
the connections and let it dry for 15 mins. You may
have to use 2 or 3 coats to cover the solder.
Electricians tape will do the same job, but it may
slip, so it's not suggested.
Now plug the green part back into the NES mother
board in the 1 player slot. Re-assemble the NES, and
give 'er a try! Its a very unique two player tag-team
videogame interaction phenomenon!
