Zapper Light Gun Mod
You know you've become
an NES nut when you start modifying accessories; as I
have done with the Zapper. Please note that this DIY
project is different from the previous ones when it
comes to the number of possibilities. The steps below
are the ones I personally taken when modding the gun,
however you can add/take out steps as you wish.
Remember this is simply a start to modding. Your only
limitation is your imagination.
Since we're
strong-willed manly men (or womanly women), it would
be fitting to start out by digging into the guts
of the accessory: [note: optional]

First let's remove the
gray plastic Nintendo covering by using a medium-sized
phillips screwdriver to remove them.

Next, remove the screws around the
orange, again, with the phillips. To take off the two
smaller screws at the tip of the gun, use a small
flatheaded screwdriver. [You may have to "break
in" the actual slits, but it shouldn't be a
problem since there are should actually be very small
slits there anyway.]

Feeling dorky? I know
I am! Look at the pretty shiny things and the
thingamabobs all over the place!
Just a little FYI
in this DIY, when you pull the trigger when playing a
light-gun compatible game the screen momentarily
turns white and the phototransistor in the gun's
barrel sends light onto the screen. Then, when the
screen is blank, whether you have correctly aimed on
a target (in the case of Duck Hunt,
a duck) determines if the game pak will react in your
success with the alignment of the sight.
You can remove the
dark-gray covering with a phillips to see the
inner-inner parts of the device. Just be careful of
the large spring shown on the mid-right of picture
#2. If you pull the trigger while the case is open,
it will fly right out and could put your
eye out.
So the novelty has
worn out, you want to do some modding now. Well, this
is where that "your only limitation is your
imagination" thing comes in. I will explain how
I modded my own gun, and hopefully you might become
inspired yourself.
Nerf® Lock 'n Load™
Nerf has given me many
great times with my friends when I was younger and
still now today--even if some of those Nerf wars got
a bit out of hand. (Jason: Sorry 'bout the lamps,
table, and chairs, bro!) Last year I tried doing
'some other kind of modding' with my Lock 'n Load gun
(Nerf heads know what I mean--tried to make it more
painful). Unfortunately that experience did not turn
out so well and I lost one of the springs for this
now- discontinued toy model. Oh well. So
what I did was I took off the yellow top part of the
LnL (similar to what we did above with the gray part
of the Zapper). [If you have not yet removed the
original gray part of the Zapper, do so now.]
<--- This is what we're talking about right here. I
simply unscrewed (phillips) it from the LnL.
<--- Now align one side on one of the Zapper's sides
and the other LnL side with its opposite. Meet up the two
sides together and screw them both together.
<--- Our best friend with doing anything
involving mods is duct tape. Don't be afraid to use it!
Tape up the top end of the LnL's shell to the Zapper till
it feels snug.
Now let's add some
more use to the gun! There is an actual opening on
the LnL's shell (look at the picture) that would be
perfect for a laser pointer for accurate duck-huntin'
goodness. You know what to do! Tape!
