BLASTER MASTER (F.X. Nine)
SUMMARY BY: Mike for NES Player

The book starts out in Jason's Frudnick's (the main character) dream. The screech R-beeeeak is repeated until Jason couldn't stand it any longer and wakes up to notice it had only been his pet frog, Fred. Fred is attracted to something outside and tries to escape his tank. Jason then lets Fred out of his tank and follows him outside his Long Island house into a nearby swamp. The frog tracts a green illuminance and begins to grow into the size that of a large dog. It then falls into a giant hole and Jason jumps after it. He is then greeted by someone in a space suit holding a gun to him. Jason quickly tries to explain that he meant no harm and was only trying to find his pet that jumped into this place. The stranger identifies herself as Yvtrkizj or "Eve" and hands him a suit that she tells is necessary to wear because of the radiation around them.

She then tells him that she doesn't know English perfectly and begins to mix different slang terms together. Both get into Eve's ship, SOPHIA 3rd, and are encountered by giant robots. Jason adjusts to his new suit and begins to push the gun commands, located on his arm pads, to destroy such enemies.

When they find a peaceful cave, Eve stops SOPHIA 3rd and explains that her home planet had been destroyed by the Plutonium Boss that hid underneath the planet for ages, sucking all the energy from it. After he had destroyed all life from Signar-el, the name of the planet, his next vision was of Earth's power supply. Suddenly after ending her story, Plutonium Boss makes his first appearance and does the usual "I'm the bad-guy, I will win you will die" routine into a nice little rhyme:

Welcome to the underground;
Please feel free to turn around.
But should you choose to forge ahead,
Heed this:the tour ends when you're dead!
The traps for fools that dare:
A dozen levels, save two pair.
To find your host, Plutonium Boss,
First go down, and then across,
Thence to your death-and this planet's loss!

After he leaves laughing like the cliche, bad boss that he is, they examine the riddle and somehow notice: a dozen levels, save two pair two pairs are four and 12 minus 4 is eight, eight leaves. (How the hell did he possibly figure THAT out?) So after their encounter, they travel into a freshly made hole, inside that room, to further their search for Fred and to save Earth.

They soon discover that this new area leads to the entrance of level 2, but a robot guard fires, thus draining their power so low that they retreat to outside a nearby cavern. There, Jason takes a blaster and enters the cave alone to find powerups before they battled with the guard again.

He finds three energy pickups and makes his way back out only to cave only to sink into the water beneath him. At the water's bottom, Jason climbs a ladder upwards until he finds a door and enters inside. There he fights more robots and blasts down a few walls to find another door, inside he hears the Plutonium Boss speak again without poetic verses ("It's difficult to feel poetic when I am preparing for a kill.") The Boss then appears to Jason and is described to look like "animal blubber...a tumor."

After studying its movements, Jason quickly bolted forward and barraded the blob with shot after shot from his gun until it was finally dead. But as he leaves for Eve, he finds out that he had only killed the first level boss and not the Plutonium Boss. They are then greeted by more of the Plutonium's sheer wit and "bad-guy"-ness, and Jason becomes determined to show everyone that he is indeed NOT a "slimpering slush brain!"

Well, after making their way back to the level 2 entrance, they quickly destroy the guard and make their way onward. After landing in a spikes trap, then repairing the SOPHIA 3rd, picking up more weapon powerups from inside more doors, they finally arrive to the level 2 boss. After defeating the crab-like mutation underboss, Jason gets back inside SOPHIA 3rd only to realize that Eve has been kidnapped and all that remains is her hologram. He must now go through the last 4 levels alone.

He travels further until he gets to the level 4 underboss, a mutated bullfrog (but not Fred) and after the battle he finds his friend, Alex, in a suit like his own. Jason then finds out that Alex had came to this place for similar reasons, to find his pet, too. They go complete levels 5, 6, and to the 7th underboss....none other than Fred! *dramatic music* Jason pleads Alex not to hurt him but Alex influences him that the Plutonium Boss' evil has already killed their pets (actually, the level 5 lobster underboss was Alex's pet...pet lobster?) so they are forced to kill it.

After defeating the 7th level boss, they are picked up into the air and transported to their final destination...the final boss! So, Plutonium Boss does the same evil things that all the evil guys do...show the heroine, Eve, chained up and then explains how he is going to destroy the world. Basically, he has a machine called cyclotron that is designed to drain all of the Earth's energy at once. Fortunately Jason blasts the device and destroys Plutonium Boss' evil plans. The team then hurries back to SOPHIA 3rd and backward throughout the previous levels until they reach the swamp above. Thus ending their story.

The next morning, Eve and Alex surprise Jason with their pet lobster and Fred. Eve explains that the underbosses were in fact only radiation illusions and that their pets weren't harmed at all. Then Jason makes a crack about Eve's stupid slang remarks and they laugh at her. HA HA HA! *Everything is good and fine, except the brain damage that all three now have due to the extreme toxic waste conditions they were introduced to. HA HA HA!
